Who Can Apply for a Ration Card in 2025?
Eligible candidates are the Indian citizens of Below Poverty Line (BPL), or low-income earning families. It requires one card per family unit where the main applicant is the head of the family. Households with no checked documents, as well as non-citizens, are not allowed to apply.

Go to the food portal of your state, attached the prescribed application form and Aadhaar, proofs of income earners and address documents. It has been found that new rules have to be activated through biometric verification in Fair Price Shops (FPS). It takes 15-30 days to be processed and notifications through SMS are available. Refused ones may be challenged within 60 days.
Income Limits and Eligibility Criteria
A family living below the BPL income of 27,000/yr (in rural India) or 36,000/yr (urban India) qualifies into having AAY cards or PHH cards. Acceptable sources of income certificates are the tehsildars, or self declaration (in certain states). Fraud is avoided by cross-checking of property records and tax.
Linkage with Aadhaar and Digital Ration Cards
By March 2025, every person who receives the ration card must issue Aadhaar. Electronic ration card (e-Ration Cards) can be used through state applications, or DigiLocker. Using biometric at FPS means that only the real customer collects supplies.
Penalties for Misuse or Fraud
Presenting forged documents or selling subsidised commodities earns a person up to 25000 rupees fine and imprisonment. The cards that spend longer than 6+ months inactive can be canceled. States are using AI to identify the real and fake beneficiaries.
How to Check Your Ration Card Status
Type your application number in your state food portal or call the toll free helpline. They are updated by SMS regarding dispatch, new delivery, or problem. Cards that are lost can be reprinted at a small charge by producing a police report.
